Lidar : What is it and how does it work?

What is Lidar?

Lidar is technology that uses Light to map out objects. Lidar stands for Light detecting and ranging. it creates 3-D maps of the physical world. So how does it work? Light Pulses out from the Lidar device into the environment that it is in. Then these light pulses bounce off of different things in the environment. The Lidar detector then measures how long it takes for the light to return to the detector, which determines how close or far away an object is. to learn more about how LIDAR works please watch the video

What is LIDAR used for?

There are many different uses for LIDAR. You can measure forest density and hight of different objects. You can use it to equip Autonomous Vehicles to determine how far away an object is before you hit with the car. You can use it see changes in the environment and to find and map out ruins and archeological sites. Police use LIDAR to see if some is speeding and many scientist in robotics use LIDAR to help with navigation for their robots.

Why is it important that I know about this for Investments?

LIDAR is used in many different products and services in our Country. it is important to know how things work and what their uses are before investing in them. One of the major up and comming uses of LIDAR is for electric Vehicles. Electric Vehicles help with the environment and may be the wave of the future for cars and trucks. Many companies already use Electric Vehicles now and more are getting in the busness every day. In another post I will talk about some of the companies that make and distribute LIDAR technology.
